THE
POETIC
THERAPIST

AUGUSTINE OBENG is the Founder & LEAD THERAPIST with POETIC THERAPY.

Augustine currently serves as Director of Social Work & Care Coordination at POETIC THERAPY. AUGUSTINE is a Registered Social Worker, OCT Certified Teacher, Community Educator, Author, Publisher, Community leader, and Advocate, from Jane and Finch. Augustine is a graduate of the University of Toronto’s Masters of Social Work with a specialization in Indigenous Trauma and Resiliency.

AUGUSTINE has spent over 20 years working with disenfranchised and marginalized groups in inner-city Toronto as well as on Indigenous Reserves in Canada. Based on his work, over the years, with youth from these various communities, as well as the experiences he gained, he was inspired to write his first book, "Changing Lanes: The First XXV." Changing Lanes is a semi-autobiographical account that illustrates that it is indeed possible to “change your lane,” from a place of bleakness and uncertainty to one of light and hopefulness.

AUGUSTINE currently works as an advocate for change; promoting the importance of positive affirming role models and mentorship; while championing the importance of Education and Literacy. Ultimately, AUGUSTINE firmly believes in the upliftment and empowerment of youth by building capacity and the belief within themselves that all things are possible, with hard work, dedication, and most importantly a positive attitude.

AUGUSTINE is extremely passionate about healing and the power of engaging in therapy; doing the work, with self, and unearthing various traumas, while highlighting the strengths that make us all unique. By engaging in this self-work, being diligent, and intentional throughout the process while being compassionate with yourself.

The goal is to become the best version of yourself. Often it is necessary to receive support from a compassionate, culturally affirming professional who has done the work and is continuing with their healing journey. One that can relate to the importance of the therapeutic process and can share practical strategies, and activities that can assist YOU on your journey to becoming the best version of yourself.

“Remember it's never too late to be Changing Lanes” (Obeng, 2016).
